SpaceX Plans a Second Starbase in Louisiana for Future Starship Launches

SpaceX is preparing to expand its Starship infrastructure beyond South Texas. The company has announced plans for a second Starbase spaceport in Louisiana, at a former Exxon property in Vermilion Parish along the Gulf Coast.SpaceX says the project represents a potential $100 billion investment, with construction expected to start in 2027.

A second home for Starship

SpaceX’s existing Starbase complex in South Texas has become the center of the company’s Starship development program. The new Louisiana facility would provide another launch location for the company’s giant reusable rocket.

SpaceX says it wants the new site to become a self-sustaining spaceport with its own propellant production, power generation, shipping infrastructure, vehicle processing facilities and airport. That is considerably more ambitious than simply constructing a launch pad.

When could launches begin?

SpaceX has indicated that construction will begin in 2027 and that its first Starship launch from the new facility could occur in 2029.Louisiana Economic Development has provided a somewhat more conservative timeline, saying construction should begin by the end of 2027, with initial operations expected around 2030.

Those dates should therefore be viewed as targets rather than guarantees.Space projects often encounter regulatory, engineering and construction delays.

Why Louisiana?

The location offers several strategic advantages. The site sits along the Gulf Coast, giving SpaceX access to a large body of water for launch operations.Louisiana also has an established industrial and aerospace infrastructure. For the region, the project could have a significant economic impact.

According to Louisiana Economic Development, the facility could create around 3,000 direct jobs over ten years, while construction employment could reach more than 30,000 positions at peak levels.

Starship is becoming central to SpaceX’s future

SpaceX has already invested billions of dollars in Starship. The vehicle is critical to several long-term projects, including the expansion of Starlink and future large-scale space missions.

The company’s plans to build satellites dedicated to AI processing could create even more demand for the rocket’s massive launch capacity.A second launch complex would give SpaceX additional infrastructure to support that ambitious roadmap.

More than a launch facility

The most interesting part of the Louisiana project is its scale.SpaceX is not describing a simple launch site. It is envisioning an integrated industrial ecosystem surrounding Starship operations. That could eventually include manufacturing, logistics, energy production and shipping. If completed as planned, Louisiana could become another major hub in SpaceX’s growing infrastructure network.

Final Take

The proposed Louisiana Starbase illustrates just how large SpaceX’s ambitions for Starship have become. The company is preparing infrastructure years ahead of what it hopes will be a major increase in launch activity. The timeline is still several years away, but the project could have a major impact on both the U.S. space industry and the Louisiana economy.
